Giants better hope Shedeur Sanders is Day 1 starter if they whiff on Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson
@Source: nj.com
Giants general manager Joe Schoen and coach Brian Daboll would be screwed if Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson sign elsewhere.
Which other QB could possibly lead this mess of an offense to meaningful games in 2025? It won’t be 40-year-old Joe Flacco, who visited their facility on Thursday. Jameis Winston isn’t saving them either.
In this scenario, the hot-seat, fourth-year regime would need to bank on Shedeur Sanders being an elite Day 1 starter à la Jayden Daniels.
That’s their only chance at saving their jobs (barring a trade up with the Titans for Cam Ward, which seems unlikely at this point). Oh, and for the purposes of this column, let’s assume the Browns sign Wilson, who visited with them on Thursday, and pass on a QB with the No. 2 pick.
OK, so can Sanders be a Sanders or C.J. Stroud? The odds are incredibly low, but… maybe?

Sanders’ biggest strength at Colorado was thriving under pressure — which he’ll need to do when playing behind this Giants O-line. His 55.1% completion rate when pressured was second-highest among the top quarterback prospects in this year’s draft class, per CBS Sports. He also had a 8.7% touchdown rate when pressured, the best such clip in the class.
He also turned around two previously dead football programs, as Sanders himself pointed out at the NFL Combine.
“We went from Jackson State to Colorado and changed two programs back to back,” he said. “You don’t think I could come to an NFL franchise and change a program again? It’s history, it’s always going to repeat itself.”
But the NFL is a different beast. And as confident as the 23-year-old may be, multiple league sources told NJ Advance Media at the combine that Ward is “miles ahead” of Sanders in terms of NFL readiness — citing the Colorado QB’s arm talent as their biggest concern.
That said, it’s way more likely that Sanders winds up being closer to Drake Maye — who wasn’t ready to start until Week 6 — than Jayden Daniels.
Schoen and Daboll, whose seats are scorching hot after a 3-14 record last year, can’t afford six weeks of Flacco or Winston as their starter — especially against the toughest schedule in the NFL. Rodgers or Wilson could keep them afloat. Flacco or Winston might lead them to rush Sanders' development, which would be a disaster in itself.
Bottom line: Get ready for more Giants QB woes next season if they strike out on Plans B and C.
