However, despite the growing concerns over Nigeria’s performances, some fans are rallying behind Chelle, calling for patience as he works to rebuild the team.
Nigeria falter at home as Zimbabwe snatch late equaliser
From the opening whistle, Nigeria dominated possession and looked eager to seize control of the match. Victor Osimhen tested Zimbabwe’s goalkeeper, Washington Arubi, early on, but the visitors grew in confidence as the first half progressed, frustrating the Super Eagles with a well-organized defensive block.
The second half saw Chelle make crucial changes, with Genk’s Tolu Arokodare coming off the bench to provide a much-needed spark. His brilliant hold-up play allowed Ola Aina to deliver a pinpoint cross, which Osimhen converted with a towering header to hand Nigeria a deserved lead.
But just when it seemed like the Super Eagles would claim all three points, Zimbabwe stunned the home crowd with a dramatic injury-time equaliser.
Tawanda Chirewa dribbled past Nigeria’s defense before toe-poking past Stanley Nwabali, silencing the stadium and leaving Chelle’s men frustrated once again.
Fans call for patience as Chelle faces early criticism
Given Nigeria’s underwhelming start to World Cup qualification, many fans were bracing for a backlash against Chelle after the disappointing draw.
However, surprisingly, a section of the Super Eagles’ faithful have come to his defense, arguing that he needs more time to implement his tactical vision.
One fan on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, "The team is beginning to have a pattern of play. The players let him down today. I think if given adequate time, he will make the Super Eagles formidable again."
Another supporter echoed the same sentiment, adding, "The good thing about our football under Eric Chelle is that there’s a well-defined pattern & style. You can see what the plan is. This is his 2nd game, with time the quality of football & performance will improve.”
Despite the calls for patience, Chelle remains on thin ice, with Nigeria’s World Cup qualification hanging in the balance. The Super Eagles will resume their campaign in September, and the next few matches could determine whether Chelle’s tenure ends in success or frustration.
