Glasgow suffer suspension blow ahead of Champions Cup quarter-final against Leinster

Glasgow Warriors have been hit with a six-week ban to their back row Henco Venter ahead of their Champions Cup quarter-final against Leinster. The URC champions, who are leading the chasing pack behind Leinster in this year's league table, face the four-time European winners at the Aviva Stadium on Friday night. They will do so without their 33-year-old South African, who was deemed to have made 'reckless contact' with the eye of Leicester prop Dan Cole in last Saturday's Champions Cup last 16 victory for the Scottish side. Venter was named the man of the match for his performance but was later cited for the incident that occurred in the second minute at Scotstoun after he faced an independent disciplinary committee on Tuesday in contravention of Law 9.12 for foul play. The No.8 accepted that he had committed an act of foul play, and that it would have warranted a red card, but that it was not intentional. The committee heard evidence and submissions from the player and his representatives, and from the EPCR Disciplinary Officer, Liam McTiernan, and determined that Venter had made reckless contact with the eye, in contravention of Law 9.12, and upheld the citing. It was decided that the offending was at the mid-range of World Rugby’s sanctions but a 12-week suspension was halved due to mitigation, including a clean disciplinary record and his acceptance that he had committed an act of foul play that would have warranted a red card. Both the player and EPCR have the right to appeal the decision. Get the latest sports headlines straight to your inbox by signing up for free email alerts.
