GNUT dismisses ‘power struggle’ claims
@Source: solomonstarnews.com
The Government for National Unity and Transformation (GNUT) has firmly denied claims of a power struggle within the ruling coalition, asserting that it remains stable, united, and focused on delivering its mandate. The clarification follows a front-page article in the Solomon Star (Issue No. 9069, Monday 21 April 2025) which claimed that high-profile figures, including former Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare, were allegedly preparing to walk out of the coalition with at least nine MPs. The report also suggested that Mr. Sogavare could demand the prime ministership if he was to break away. Adding to the speculation, GNUT coalition partner People First Party was reportedly considering a withdrawal with up to 19 MPs. The party is led by businessman and MP Chachabule Amoi, and includes Hon. Namson Tran, MP for West Honiara and Chair of the Government Caucus. In response, the Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet issued a statement on Monday acknowledging the article but rejecting its premise. “While media commentary is an important part of a free and democratic society, the headline does not accurately reflect the current environment within the Government,” the statement read. It emphasized that the GNUT coalition, under the leadership of Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele, remains “stable, united, and focused on its priorities—strengthening governance, supporting national development, and improving the lives of all Solomon Islanders.” The statement added that preparations for the upcoming parliamentary session, along with party consultations, are routine aspects of parliamentary democracy. “The Government remains committed to operating with purpose, transparency, and accountability, and welcomes constructive public discourse grounded in facts,” it continued. A series of internal meetings are expected to be held this week—possibly starting today (Monday)—to address any political differences and plan reconciliation ceremonies to mend divisions lingering from last year’s failed attempt to change the government. Leadership is expected to be a key topic of discussion. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Manele has formally invited His Excellency the Governor-General to open Parliament this week with the traditional Speech from the Throne, which will outline the Government’s legislative and policy agenda for 2025.
