Wednesday was a day of raw emotion, pride, and unforgettable achievement for Team Ireland at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin. With families watching on in tears of joy, Ireland’s athletes produced breathtaking performances, bringing home five medals in Alpine Skiing and celebrating a hard-fought victory in Floorball. Alpine Skiers Lucy Best from Ballinderry, Co Antrim and Caolan McConville from Aghagallon won their respective competitions - with Caolan being the first ever Special Olympics Ireland Skier to win in the Advanced section. The scale of their success was matched only by the spirit they brought to competition—fearless, passionate, and brave in the face of some hairy conditions on the slope and impressively tough competition from athletes in their groupings. Reflecting on his historic win, Caolan said: “Winning gold at this level is unbelievable. A lot of hard work was put into this, a lot of training, but yes absolutely delighted, and hopefully we can go on and win more tomorrow." Jill Sloan, Head Coach was filled with pride: "I cannot believe it, it's been an amazing day. Team Ireland have done so well, they don't train on snow, there are a few here who have never been to the games before, absolutely thrilled, that's all I have to say, I am quite emotional to be honest!" Glyn Williamson, Assistant Head Coach, looked ahead to the next day of competition saying: "Words cannot explain, it's been a fantastic day, they have trained really hard for today, they have had a great time, and the medals are just the icing on the cake. "Really really pleased. They are full of confidence now so we are looking forward, its another day, a different type of competition, it's a faster one, but yes I believe they are full of confidence, feeling good, there could be more medals, that's our fingers crossed!"
