Golf-buggy taxi for residents of Casares

In the picturesque pueblo blanco of Casares, the narrow, steep streets look great on a postcard but are a huge challenge for visitors and residents, especially the elderly. To address this, Mayor Juan Luis Villalón has launched a new free golf buggy service to improve mobility for seniors in the historic village centre. Anyone who has visited Casares village will know that it not an easy-going stroll. In face, hiking books are strongly encouraged. Even driving to the centre has become notorious for being the quickest way of losing your wing mirrors, as confirmed by David España, local artist who has his gallery in the pueblo blanco. Inspired by a conversation with a crutch-using resident who struggled to visit the town square, Villalón had been seeking solutions to combat isolation among the elderly. Since 2020, Casares has used a sociosanitary buggy for essential tasks like medical transport and meal delivery. The new buggy, however, focuses on emotional well-being, enabling seniors to shop, visit friends, or enjoy a coffee in the plaza. Operating mornings from 10am to 2pm and evenings from 6pm to 8pm, the service is simple to use: call 600 658 213, and the buggy picks you up at home. Its success owes much to the driver, a well-loved local from the historic centre, who provides companionship and a chat alongside transport. “He’s more than a driver; he’s a friend,” Villalón says. Funded entirely by taxpayers’ money, the buggy was rigorously tested to navigate Casares’ steepest and bumpiest streets, like the Arco de la Villa, and even in the rain. Villalón believes Casares is a pioneer in this initiative, which complements other senior services like cognitive stimulation programs. “Our duty is to ensure our elderly live with autonomy, dignity, and joy,” he said.
