Jesus teaches us in the Gospels to go for good leaders. He emphasizes servant leadership as the ideal model for leadership. The teachings of Jesus means leaders should prioritize serving others, demonstrating humility and using their authority with grace and respect. Instead of seeking power or personal gain, leaders should be focused on the well-being and needs of those they lead.Jesus himself exemplified this by washing his disciples’ feet, demonstrating that greatness is found in service. Leaders should not lord it over the people, but be their servants.During a visit to one of the Catholic churches, Geld Aquino (who I later learned was a political candidate) approached me and we exchanged religious views on the coming elections. I answered him based on the Gospels.Leaders should seek God’s guidance and wisdom in their decision-making, recognizing that true leadership is a reflection of God’s character.Leaders should value others above themselves and be willing to be the lowest rather than the highest. Humility is crucial for building trust and loyalty.Leaders should treat everyone with respect and love, recognizing their inherent worth and dignity.Leaders are called upon to uphold truth and justice, protect the vulnerable and speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves.Leaders should be role models, setting an example for others to follow with their actions and character.Personally, I call on the Filipino Catholic faithful to actively engage in politics by supporting candidates who have the necessary skills and experience to perform well in office.Let us not vote for politicians with lavish lifestyles. Politicians who have extravagant and luxurious lifestyles, collections of luxury shoes, watches, high-end cars and motorcycles, and who are frequently in exclusive golf courses are not good leaders. As good Christians, we have a responsibility to God to vote correctly and in accordance with our conscience.Let us not be complacent about the country’s situation. Our inaction and low regard for politics will not bring about development. Let us not gamble with the future of our country. Let us fight indifference. Let us be concerned for the welfare of others. We always say vote wisely; voters should not be swayed by disinformation, especially on social media. We can be blinded by lies and deception, putting our conscience to sleep and hardening us like rocks. Instead, we have to always side with the truth even if it is unpopular and “even if it hurts.”We Christians are called on to vote rightly according to our conscience and not be swayed by mass trends. Don’t just rely on others; we need to be involved. Let us work to change our political culture, little by little. The role of religious leaders has become even more severe with the current situation of our country; especially with the main issue in politics having to do with the spiritual and moral — the issue of “truth” and “falsehood.”Tomorrow, 12 May, the people will exercise their right to vote and choose their government leaders. I once again appeal to the voters to go for leaders committed to serving the interests of the people.
