The Fiji Primary Schools Netball Association (FPSNA) received a major boost when they sealed a sponsorship with Goodman Fielder yesterday. The amount of the sponsorship was not disclosed to the public. Speaking to SUNsports, FPSNA president Timaima Nailolo expressed her gratitude to the sponsors as they stepped in to help nurture young netballers in the country. “This sponsorship opens up a whole new horizon for the association. “It will also help us expand our grassroots lessons as well because it will breed the next Fiji Pearls squad in the future.” Nailolo said coaching young netballers is a challenge because they need to work hard and also provide best care possible. “With Goodman Fielder involved now, we look to pan out and execute the vision. “We thank them for their huge support and it is a big help to us as an association and as a sport,” she said. Vice-president, Elena Vadei said the sponsorship marked a major milestone for the sport. “For so long we have been trying to look for a major sponsor. “Now, Goodman Fielder has come on board and it is a big blessing indeed,” Vadei said. She added in the previous years they were only able to sponsor and take care of Central division schools but now it is the whole of Fiji and that covers the 26 districts. “This sponsorship also allows us to host the National Primary Schools Netball competition in Sigatoka this month. All of the 26 districts will be there,” she said. The competition will be from April 29 to May 1. “We needed financing and we are now able to go through with our plans because of the sponsorship. We are a non-profitable organisation; whatever money comes, we pay what can be paid and then we see from there,” Vadei added. She added with this sponsorship; the association will be able to help districts who have come from afar. Vadei believes other sports such as rugby and soccer has raised the competitiveness interests to young female athletes. “We want to develop our sport at grassroots level because we have to keep it going. “Most girls are interested now in rugby but it shouldn’t hinder the fact that there is netball too in the mix,” she added.
