GPL players are mentally tougher than PSL players – Maxwell Konadu
@Source: 3news.com
Former Black Leopards head coach Maxwell Konadu has weighed in on the differences between the Ghana Premier League (GPL) and the South African Premier Soccer League (PSL), stating that Ghanaian players have a stronger mentality. While the PSL is widely regarded as one of Africa’s top leagues due to its superior infrastructure, financial incentives, and player quality, Konadu believes that GPL players possess a mental edge over their South African counterparts. Speaking to Akoma 87.9 FM, the former Black Stars assistant coach highlighted the contrasting mindsets of players in both leagues. “A South African player grows up having almost everything a European player does. So, the hunger and drive to move abroad aren’t as intense as with Ghanaian players, who are always eager to travel to Europe. That makes a big difference.” “One thing is certain, the Ghanaian mentality. We have a stronger mindset than South African players. This is not to say South Africans lack talent; they have plenty. But when it comes to mental toughness, Ghanaians have the edge.” Konadu also pointed out a key tactical difference between the two leagues, stating that South African coaches are more unpredictable in their approach compared to those in Ghana. “In the National First Division (NFD), where I coached, many teams played distinct styles of football. Each team has its identity, and that’s something I observed.” “In Ghana, you c an often predict a coach’s tactics before a game. But in South Africa, it’s different, you never know what to expect next.” With experience in both leagues, Konadu’s insights provide an interesting perspective on the contrasting football cultures of Ghana and South Africa.
