Grand National 2025: Olympian sees 'unruly' horse banned from running at Aintree

Mr Incredible has been banned from competing in the Grand National after the British Horseracing Authority deemed him “unruly” and a potential danger to other competitors . The nine-year-old horse, who is trained by Sandy Thomson and owned by ex-Olympian James Manclark, has a patchy recent history in races. While Mr Incredible has won two of his 16 races and finished second four times, he has pulled up in three of his past four and refused to race in the other. Scotland-based Thomson has called in horse therapist Freddy Steele in an effort to satisfy the BHA that Mr Incredible is ready to compete at Aintree on Saturday . But their efforts have been in vain, dashing the hopes of 85-year-old owner Manclark, who competed for Great Britain in the luge at the 1968 Winter Olympics. “I am desperately frustrated, annoyed and sad,” said Thomson. “James is pretty devastated. He has been trying for three years and we found him a horse, and his health comes and goes. Our aim is to get the horse to run next year.” The BHA said in a statement: “Each horse entered to take part in any race over the Grand National fences must undergo a review by the National Fence Review Panel, a highly experienced group including former jockeys, veterinarians, clerks of the course and stewards who carefully consider each horse’s suitability to take part. “The panel carefully assesses each horse's ability, fitness, recent form and overall readiness for its intended race and works closely with connections of any horse about which it has concerns before a decision on its participation is reached.” Mr Incredible has not completed a race since March 2024 and a recent race at Kelso, where he started to pull up, is understood to have played a part in the BHA’s decision. Stewards at the race told the BHA he was "unruly" and appeared to pull himself up after the 14th fence. "It was 100 per cent the BHA's decision,” Thomson added. “We appealed it. Their concern was that he would disrupt the start. My defence was that he has never disrupted any start. "Having got him started at Kelso I saw no reason why he wouldn't start in the Grand National, and having more horses around him would have helped. "The other thing they said was about his recent form, but their criteria said they would take into account the last six runs and that included second in the Midlands National. It was a totally unsatisfactory situation." Mr Incredible unseated in the 2024 and 2023 Nationals when trained by the legendary Willie Mullins . He could still run in next week’s Scottish Grand National at Ayr where he is a 100-1 chance.
