P.R. Sreejesh, India’s legendary hockey goalkeeper who stood tall in a cricket-crazy country, has become the brand ambassador of Kerala adventure tourism. A government order appointing Sreejesh, the ‘Great Wall of Indian Hockey’, as he is popularly known, ambassador of the Kerala Adventure Tourism Promotion Society (KATPS) has been issued by the government. KATPS functions under the Department of Tourism. The State, with a bewitching landscape, speckled with hilltops, tropical forests, and crisscrossed by meandering rivers and sprawling backwaters, has become one of the sought-after adventure tourism destinations in the country. According to government sources, by appointing Sreejesh as brand ambassador of Kerala adventure tourism, the State, with a 580 km-long coastline on one side and the Western Ghats on the other, can woo more domestic and international tourists. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will soon announce the decision at a public function here. According to the sources, land, water, and air-related adventure activities, including trekking, camping, rock climbing, wildlife safaris, bird watching, cycling, water sports, off-road jaunts and paragliding, being organised in the State will get international exposure through Sreejesh, whose two-decade-long career spanning four Olympics and numerous accolades was similar to an adventure. Kerala, which recently conducted an international five-day paragliding competition attracting 86 participants from 11 countries at Kolahalamedu, located 7 km from Wagamon in Idukki at an altitude of 3,000 ft, is getting ready to hold an international surfing festival at Varkala in Thiruvananthapuram from April 10 to 13. A mountain terrain biking championship (MTB Kerala 2025) will also be held in the last week of April at Mananthavady in Wayanad. “We are sure that the man who carried the country’s hopes and dreams for nearly two decades is capable of taking Kerala adventure tourism to new heights,” say officials. Idukki, Wayanad, and Thiruvananthapuram are the districts where the bulk of the adventure tourism-promoting units are registered in the State. Around 86 adventure tourism units are operational in Kerala, offering a slice of the natural wonders of the State to adventure buffs.
