Macroom History Group this evening hosted an event showcasing the colourful history of Macroom Golf Club over the last century. Presented by Dr Con Kelleher, Jim Morris and Margaret Buckley, the public event took place at the Castle hotel in Macroom, and included a display of interesting archive items for people to view. There are many other exciting events planned throughout the year to mark the centenary of the club's foundation. Macroom golf course now sits on the site of the 12th Century Castle Demesne. Lady Olivia Ardilaun, a descendant of the McCarthy chiefs and the widow of Lord Ardilaun, who was also known as Sir Arthur Guinness, sold the Castle demesne in 1924 to a group of local businessmen to be held in trust for the people of the town. Macroom Golf Club was founded in 1925 as a nine-hole course within the demesne of Macroom Castle. The home of Lady Ardilaun and one time home of William Penn (founder of the U.S state of Pennsylvania) was bought for the sum of £1,500. The year 1993 was a new beginning for Macroom Golf Club, through the addition of an extra nine holes on the banks of the Sullane River, and a new clubhouse was completed in 1997. In 2004, another massive project was undertaken when the entire front nine greens were redesigned and replaced at the club. While much has changed in Macroom Golf Club since it was founded 100 years ago, the one thing that remains constant is the desire of its membership to continuously try to improve the course and facilities. With that in mind, the club has a very active senior membership who get involved in volunteering and helping out the club in various projects. Macroom Golf Club currently has 600 members and is actively seeking to increase this number, with a special introductory offer of €800.
