Princeton senior and Dickinson College (PA) commit Walter Gumbinger fired a 3-under 69 to win his first tournament by six strokes over six other golfers to capture individual medalist honors at the Colonial Valley Conference (CVC) Tournament Thursday at Mercer Oaks Golf Course (West) in West Windsor.
Gumbinger had five birdies on the day including three on his back nine, highlighted by back-to-back birdies on the par 4, 380-yard 11th hole and the par 4, 370-yard 12th hole.
“Today I felt I was in full control of my golf game. I played very smart golf and took little to no risks throughout the round,” said Gumbinger. “Right now, we are focusing all of our attention onto sectionals this upcoming Monday. Then hopefully making it to the TOC.”
A match of scorecards determined placing for the six players tied for second (3-over 75) as West Windsor-Plainsboro North sophomore Ethan Li placed second, Hightstown sophomore Gage Damore came in third, Princeton sophomore Andrew Spies finished fourth, Allentown junior Jake Lachance placed fifth, West Windsor-Plainsboro South Nicholas Yagnik secured sixth and Notre Dame sophomore Tommy Carpenter finished seventh.
The Tigers (303), who won for the second time in the last three years, took home the team title by 16 strokes over second-place Notre Dame (319) and West Windsor-Plainsboro North (321). Princeton Day (327) and West Windsor-Plainsboro South (330) rounded out the top five.
Other Princeton golfers who contributed: sophomore Phineas Choe (77), senior Owen Barry (82) and junior Kona MacAllister (83).
15 schools (13 teams) and 67 golfers competed on the par 72, 6,150-yard layout.
