The 2023 Caribbean Premier League (CPL) winners Guyana Amazon Warriors will host this year’s ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League (GSL), which is scheduled to take place from 10 to 18 July at Providence Stadium. The Warriors will be competing against four elite franchises across the globe for the GSL trophy and a share of the US$ 1 million prize fund. Chairman of the ExxonMobil GSL and former legendary West Indies captain, Sir Clive Lloyd, shared his excitement for the upcoming competition, saying, “The Guyana Amazon Warriors were brilliant hosts for the tournament in 2024, and I know all the players and visiting teams appreciated the warm welcome they received.” He continued, “Beyond cricket, the Warriors and the people of Guyana helped showcase this incredible country to the world. This year’s tournament offers another wonderful opportunity for Guyana to shine as a top-tier destination, known for its breathtaking beauty, hospitality, and passion for the game.” The inaugural event in 2024 consisted of the Warriors as hosts, Hampshire Hawks from the Vitality Blast in England, Lahore Qalanders from Pakistan Super League, Cricket Victoria from Australia’s Sheffield Shield and eventual champions Rangpur Riders from the Bangladesh Premier League. In the first ever final of the competition on December 6 2024, Rangpur Riders made 178-3 in their allotted 20 overs batting first with Soumya Sarker top scoring with an unbeaten 86 runs and Steven Taylor contributing with 68. Barbadian medium fast bowler Dominic Drakes had Cricket Victoria’s best figures with the ball, finishing with 1-20 in his four overs. Needing 179 for victory at Providence, the Australian side fell 56 runs short, having been bowled out for 122 with Englishman Joe Clarke top scoring with his innings worth 40 runs. (JC)
