A former NFL agent is on life support after falling from a golf cart driven by Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway.
According to TMZ, Jeff Sperbeck was in the back of the golf cart at The Madison Club in La Quinta, CA last Saturday when he fell out of the moving cart and his head on the ground, unconscious but breathing.
Elway, who TMZ said did not do anything wrong that led to the incident, immediately called 9-1-1 for assistance. Law enforcement and paramedics responded but Sperbeck’s condition deteriorated, leading doctors to place him on life support. TMZ added that Sperbeck’s prognosis is grim and there is no chance he will recover, with doctors keeping him alive long enough to have his organs removed to be donated to other people.
Elway and Sperbeck share a close friendship, with Sperbeck serving as Elway’s agent and business manager during his playing career, helping him establish restaurants. The two later became business partners in a winery. Besides Elway, Sperbeck represented other players including Ronnie Lott, Joey Porter and Johnnie Morton.
In his 16 seasons in the NFL, all with the Denver Broncos, Elway was named to the Pro Bowl nine times and helped the Broncos win two Super Bowls. He was also named the league’s MVP in 1987 after throwing for 3,198 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.
