Freeman won two Olympic medals in 1968:
- Bronze medal in the 400 meters race with a time of 44.41 seconds
- Gold medal in the 4x400m relay event as part of the US team that initially finished second but was later awarded the top spot due to a controversy
Freeman, along with fellow medalists Lee Evans and Larry James, courageously participated in the Black Power salute protest during the 400 meters medal ceremony.
Wearing black gloves and berets, they symbolized Black Power and human rights activism, highlighting the intersection of sports and social justice.

Now living in Ghana, Freeman's legacy extends beyond his impressive athletic career, serving as a powerful reminder of the impact athletes can have on social justice movements.
