Harriman-and-West Airport Manager Bruce Goff resigns amid ongoing dispute surrounding hangar, aircraft

NORTH ADAMS — Harriman-and-West Airport Manager Bruce Goff has become the latest departure from the city-owned facility.
Goff, who came on as manager in 2022, resigned Friday. City officials have been tight-lipped about reason for his resignation, and the issue went unaddressed at Monday’s Airport Commission meeting.
Though Goff was generally well-regarded, several area residents who use the airport in various capacities have told The Eagle that they thought Goff picked sides in the yearslong dispute between Derek Rougeau, Jackie Rougeau and Dodd Rougeau, and Michael Milazzo and Brian Doyle.
Goff declined to comment Wednesday other than to say he's looking forward to spending more time with family and working on his golf swing.
Airport Commission Chair Jim Haskins said that until a new airport manager is hired, he, City Administrator Katherine Eade, and some combination of other commission members will be running the airport.
“Obviously it’s not ideal, but we’ll make it work,” he said Wednesday. “We’re trying to get away from this past stuff and move forward in a positive way … to get people back together and stop the division that’s been happening.”
The resignation comes in the midst of a civil trial stemming from vandalism to an airport hangar in 2020, as well as a stranded aircraft owned by Derek Rougeau. Goff and Rougeau had for over a year clashed about the presence of the plane, which has been tied up in the litigation.
Derek Rougeau’s lawyer was at Monday’s Airport Commission meeting, at which he successfully lobbied the commission to rescind fines that had been levied against Rougeau in connection with the aircraft.
Also at issue in the ongoing trial is the vandalism of the hangar, for which Milazzo and Doyle were implicated in a North Adams Police report for the unsanctioned demolition of the hangar that the parties once occupied together.
The wake of the personal and commercial dispute has led to several resignations on the Airport Commission after the commission agreed to lease the now-rebuilt hangar to Milazzo last year, before walking that decision back.
On Saturday, Milazzo said on Facebook of Goff’s leaving, “the incompetent administration of the City of North Adams has now forced the best airport manager the city has had to date out of his job!”
Mayor Jennifer Macksey said the city had no role in Goff's resignation, noting he said Goff stepped down of his own accord. She declined to comment further on the situation Wednesday, citing the ongoing civil trial.
