@Source: news18.com
Harry Brook came out to bat at No. 5 for England on Tuesday (June 24) in the second innings but failed to open his account. He was caught behind by Rishabh Pant off Shardul Thakur’s bowling on the fourth ball of the 55th over of England’s 2nd innings. By getting out for a first-ball duck in the second innings of the ongoing Leeds Test, Brook created an unwanted record. He became the first batter in the history of Test cricket to score 99 runs in the first innings and get out for a golden duck in the second innings. The 26-year-old right-handed batter scored 99 runs from 112 balls in the first innings on Sunday (June 22). He hammered 11 fours and 2 sixes before Prasidh Krishna dismissed him. He is only the second English batter after Marcus Trescothick to get out on 99 against India. England batters to get out on 99 in Tests Herbert Sutcliffe vs South Africa in Cape Town (1927) Eddie Paynter vs Australia at Lord’s (1938) Norman Yardley vs South Africa in Nottingham (1947) Mike Smith vs South Africa at Lord’s (1960) Mike Smith vs Pakistan in Lahore (1961) Ted Dexter vs Australia in Brisbane (1962) Dennis Amiss vs Pakistan in Karachi (1973) Geoff Boycott vs West Indies in Port Of Spain (1974) Graham Gooch vs Australia in Melbourne (1980) Martyn Moxon vs New Zealand in Auckland (1988) Mike Atherton vs Australia in Lord’s (1993) Mike Atherton vs South Africa in Leeds (1994) Marcus Trescothick vs India in Ahmedabad (2001) Kevin Pietersen vs Bangladesh in Chattogram (2010) Jonny Bairstow vs South Africa in Nottingham (2017) Harry Brook vs India in Leeds (2025) A total of 14 English batters on 16 occasions have gotten out after scoring 99 runs in a Test match. England had high hopes from Brook in the second session of fifth day’s play but he failed. Duckett creates history Before getting the better of Book, Shardul picked Ben Duckett’s wicket. The left-handed batter, however, scored 149 runs from 170 balls for the Ben Stokes-led side before losing his wicket. The 149-run knock on Tuesday helped him break the record of scoring the most runs in the fourth innings of a Test match against India. Before Duckett’s 149, the record for most runs in the 4th innings of a Test against India was held by Joe Root. Root remained unbeaten on 142 for the Poms during the Birmingham Test played in July 2022.
