'Has Bumrah Said He Won't Captain India?' Manjrekar On India's Test Captaincy Debate
@Source: news18.com
As the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to announce the new captain for the Indian Test team ahead of the tour to England, the debate continues regarding who should lead the line and the former cricketer, Sanjay Manjrekar, weighed in on the debate. With both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retiring from Test cricket, there remains a big hole that the two leave in the Test squad. Whoever is set to replace the senior duo has big shoes to fill. One of the big roles that needs to be addressed is with regard to captaincy. In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Manjrekar questioned the whole discussion amidst reports that suggested that Shubman Gill is the front-runner to take over the leadership position and not Jasprit Bumrah. Many former cricketers also weighed in on the debate and cited his injury record as the prime reason for not wanting him to lead the side. Has Bumrah said he won’t captain India? Or has he ruled himself out of the England series? Then why are we discussing who will captain India? 🤯 — Sanjay Manjrekar (@sanjaymanjrekar) May 18, 2025 With Gill as a captain, many former cricketers questioned if he is the right man for the job, considering that he has poor numbers when playing overseas and has yet to establish himself in the longest format as someone like Kohli has. But Manjrekar had a completely different take on the whole issue altogether. He asked, “Has Bumrah said he won’t captain India? Or has he ruled himself out of the England series? Then why are we discussing who will captain India?” The upcoming England tour, which comprises a five-match Test series beginning in June, later this month, will be a key moment in Indian cricket as the new Test captain will have their first shot at making a big impact, considering the new World Test Championship cycle. Whether it is Shubman Gill or Jasprit Bumrah or even somebody else, the fact of the matter is that the next captain certainly has big shoes to fill and a lot needs to be done should the Test team be ready to go all the way and win that first WTC title. Whether that is going to be a reality, only time will tell.
