COLUMBUS, Ohio - Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam, busy of late pushing plans for an enclosed football stadium in Brook Park, was in Columbus on Wednesday to ceremonially launch a residential development adjacent to the home of the Columbus Crew soccer club, also owned by the Haslams.
The Astor Park residential project is a partnership between the Haslam Sports Group and the Pizzuti Companies. The development is near the Huntington Park baseball stadium and Nationwide Arena just northwest of downtown Columbus.
Dubbed Residential A Block, the development will have 261 multifamily units - some apartments and some townhomes.
Astor Park currently includes a 154,000-square-foot office building with 17,250 square feet of ground-floor retail space, plus a public plaza and park.
“Our vision for Lower.com Field has always been for more than just our home on match days,” Dee and Jimmy Haslam, managing partners of the Haslam Sports Group, said in a news release.
“It was important to our family to help create a true community asset for all of Columbus, a place that connects our community, one that is inclusive and accessible, and also where events and gatherings happen 365 days a year.”
The Haslams joined forces with Columbus-area investor Dr. Pete Edwards to purchase the soccer team in January 2019, after the previous owner had announced intentions to move the club to Austin, Texas.
Work began on the Crew stadium later in 2019, opening in the summer of 2021. Cost of the 20,319-seat stadium was reported at $313.9 million, with the city, county and local governments contributing more than $100 million to surrounding site development, according to the Columbus Dispatch. The team formerly played near Ohio State University.
