Authorities have released the harrowing cause of death for a young mother whose body was found last December in Charlotte, North Carolina. Ta’Haley Payton, 22, died from hypothermia, according to an autopsy report from the Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner's Office. Her death was ruled an accident. She also had non-lethal levels of rubbing alcohol and a non-pharmaceutical benzodiazepine in her system, according to the report. Ta’Haley, the mother of a newborn daughter, was visiting Charlotte from Spartanburg in November to celebrate her birthday with her boyfriend, the father of the child. She was reported missing by her family on November 20, with the day before being her actual birthday. Karlotta Payton, Ta’Haley's younger sister, told FOX Carolina that Ta’Haley and her boyfriend got into an argument while on the trip. Kelanie Davis, Ta’Haley's best friend, said her boyfriend drove away and left her 'with no phone, no money, no resources.' He allegedly kicked her out of his car after this and left her at the Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham in the northern part of the city, the Charlotte Observer reported. The boyfriend was then said to have driven home and called Ta’Haley's mother telling her to pick her up. A witness said they saw Ta’Haley walk into a Crumbl Cookies three times asking for help and hoping to use someone's phone. One woman who let her use her phone said Ta’Haley texted her boyfriend that she was 'sorry for everything' and would sleep outside. Employees at an Arby's and a Trader Joe's in that area also said they saw Ta’Haley that night. Her family said she admitted to an area emergency department for postpartum depression but was later released. Her body was found on December 9 in the waters of Little Sugar Creek near the 1100 block of Baxter Street. This is close the center of the city and where her friends and family had organized a search a few days earlier. 'I’m saddened to share that Ta’Haley Payton was found yesterday. While this case is not closed, I truly believe that the public's efforts contributed 100% to helping locate my best friend, and we will continue to work together to bring her justice,' Davis wrote on Facebook the day after Ta’Haley was found. Even though the autopsy ruled Ta’Haley's death an accident, her mother Stephanie Crawford doesn't believe it. That's largely because she was found wearing only a bra. The report also noted that much of her hair was ripped out. 'Where are her clothes at? Where is her hair? She only had three strands of hair left in her head. What about the gash on her forehead? She was found naked with no clothing on,' Crawford told WCCB. 'I’m not going to stop fighting until I get the answers because, I can’t rest until I have the answers,' she added. Crawford said she will keep investigating what happened to her daughter by going around to businesses in the area to compile more security footage from the night she went missing. She also plans to hire a private medical examiner to conduct a second autopsy. Through a GoFundMe, the family has raised $1,605 toward the $3,500 they need. A second GoFundMe set up for the family helped pay to transport her body back to her hometown and her funeral service.
