'Have they ever had a conversation?' - Rennae Stubbs corrects co-host on Taylor Fritz and Elena Rybakina’s chemistry

On a recent episode of The Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast, a lively discussion unfolded about the on-court communication, or apparent lack thereof, between mixed doubles pairing Taylor Fritz and Elena Rybakina.
The conversation sparked a playful exchange between hosts Caitlin Thompson and Rennae Stubbs, shedding light on how the duo’s chemistry might be misunderstood.
Thompson kicked off the banter by jokingly questioning their communication: "At the bottom of the list of players who have never said a word to each other is Elena Rybakina and Taylor Fritz. Have they ever had a conversation?" she quipped, teasing the pair’s famously quiet on-court demeanor.
Stubbs quickly jumped in to correct her co-host, sharing a more informed perspective: "Well, the reason that they play together is... didn't they win the Indian Wells exhibition tournament? So they've already had interaction, and let me tell you, they're going to be hard to beat.".
Indeed, the pair clinched the Eisenhower Cup at Indian Wells in March, overcoming several strong teams including Daniil Medvedev and Amanda Anisimova, as well as Madison Keys and Tommy Paul in the final, where they triumphed 10-4 in a thrilling match tiebreak.
The victory earned them a $200,000 prize and a nod of legitimacy despite the tongue-in-cheek criticism.
While Fritz and Rybakina may not be the most vocal partners on court, their results show they have an effective partnership built on understanding and complementary skills rather than constant chatter. Fritz has long enjoyed mixed doubles competition, previously partnering with Coco Gauff at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where they made a strong run to the quarterfinals.
And let us not forget Fritz’s other Olympic run teaming up with Tommy Paul, where he grabbed bronze in men’s doubles at Paris 2024 after defeating the Czech pairing Tomas Machac & Adam Pavlasek 6‑3, 6‑4, a testament to his chemistry when it counts.
He has also competed in the United Cup and previous editions of the US Open’s "Mixed Madness." Reflecting on his growing mixed doubles résumé, Fritz told Town and Country magazine:
"Mixed doubles is always a great challenge, and I’ve had some amazing experiences with it over the years, from the Olympics to the United Cup, and even the USO Mixed Madness last year. I’m definitely looking forward to the chance to compete for a Grand Slam title in the future.".
If their Indian Wells performance is any indication, the chemistry is there, even if it’s the understated kind. And with big names like Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner, and Nick Kyrgios also jumping into the mixed doubles arena, all eyes will be on this next-gen pairing to prove they belong.
