'He Had A Great Performance': Nagelsmann Hails Leon Goretzka As Germany Clinch 2-1 Win Over Italy In UEFA Nations League

UEFA Nations League: Following Germany's 2-1 win over Italy in the UEFA Nations League's quarter-final match at the iconic San Siro on March 21, German head coach Julian Nagelsmann heaped praise on Leon Goretzka for scoring the winner and helping his side seal a win. Nagelsmann said that the Bayern Munich midfielder showcased a great performance against the Italians. It was the 30-year-old's first goal for Germany in the last four years. He last scored against Hungary in 2021, when Germany ended the game in a 2-2 draw.Goretzka scored the winner in the 76th minute of the match from Joshua Kimmich's corner. The midfielder beat his marker and scored a fiery header at the near post.While speaking after the end of the match, Nagelsmann hailed Goretzka and said that he attacked a lot in the game. The head coach lauded both his attacking and defensive qualities.“He played well and he attacked a lot too. After everything he went through in the past year, he had a really great performance. He is now back with us and I’m very happy with what he did tonight. Not just his goal but his presence on the field, both in attack and in defense,” Nagelsmann said as quoted by AP.Talking about the match, Nagelsmann added that the first was tough for the Germans but they made a good comeback in the second half.“The first half was tough, we barely got into our stride. In the first half, the Germans were a bit shaky but they managed to not concede anymore in the game. Tim Kleindienst scored the equalizer for Germany in the 49th minute. In the second half, the Germans gave a solid fightback. A few minutes before the end of the match, Goretzka scored the winner and helped his side clinch a crucial win over Italy.The second leg of the match between Germany and Italy will take place on March 24 at the Signal Iduna Park.
