A Nebraska woman has been convicted of murdering her boyfriend and using makeup to conceal the bruises on his body.
Michelle Lee Marr, 49, was convicted of second-degree murder and tampering with evidence for the March 2022 death of Jesse Gilpin.
The US Attorney's Office in Nebraska said on March 12, 2022, Marr contacted Winnebago EMS to report that Gilpin was not waking up.
Gilpin was taken to Twelve Clans Unity hospital, then taken by helicopter to Mercy One Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa, due to the severity of his injuries.
Prosecutors said nurses found that Gilpin's face was covered in makeup used to cover up bruises.
'A nurse washed off the makeup and found bruises on Gilpin’s face underneath the makeup,' court documents said.
'Gilpin had a golf-ball sized or bigger knot or bruise on the left side of his head. Gilpin had bruises on the right side of his head also. The makeup was described as having been applied thickly and appeared fresh and not slept in.
'A nurse at Mercy Medical Center said it took her a while to scrub the makeup off Gilpin’s face and she noted it was a match for Gilpin’s skin tone.'
Doctors determined Gilpin had brain trauma and swelling and he succumbed to his injuries the next day.
An autopsy determined his cause of death to be blunt force trauma and the manner of death to be homicide.
Gilpin's injuries were consistent with inflicted trauma as opposed to trauma which might result from some type of fall, according to the US Attorney's Office.
Marr claimed to have been passed out from approximately 5:00pm on March 11 until she found her 'live-in boyfriend' unresponsive on their bed.
However, prosecutors found social media evidence and evidence from Marr’s phone that contradicted her claims.
During the trial, witnesses testified to observing previous incidents of Marr physically assaulting Gilpin.
Court documents said: 'During the course of the investigation it was learned that Marr had been physically abusive to Gilpin, striking him in the head in the past.
'Marr’s children and other relatives have seen Marr assault Gilpin. Some of Gilpin’s family members observed assaults and saw Gilpin in the immediate aftermath of such assaults.'
A jury found Marr guilty after a nearly five-day trial and her sentencing is scheduled for June 5.
She faces a maximum sentence of life in prison for the second-degree murder charge and a maximum 20 years in prison for the tampering with documents or evidence charge.
The US Attorney's Office noted the case was prosecuted in federal court because the offense was a felony and occurred on the Winnebago Indian Reservation in Nebraska.
