There had already been several memorable firsts for the fledgling Portland Hearts of Pine pro soccer team at Lewiston High.
First win. First comeback win.
Tuesday night the Hearts suffered their first loss in Maine, falling in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup game, 2-1, against Rhode Island FC, a second-division club. Third-division Portland gave up two first-half goals in two minutes.
Portland had won two Open Cup games at Lewiston, beating an amateur squad CD Faialense, 4-0; and Hartford Athletic 1-1, 4-2 in penalty kicks.
Rhode Island’s goals came from Clay Holstad in the 35th minute and Frank Nodarse in the 37th. Portland striker Titus Washington scored in the 65th minute.
A shot by Portland’s Nathaniel James labeled for the top left corner late in added time of the second half had to be turned away by Rhode Island goalie Jackson, who made seven saves.
