Australian heavyweight hope Justis Huni is out to grab an unexpected shot at glory after stepping in as a replacement to take on British star Fabio Wardley in England for the WBA "interim'' world title.
The pair will meet at Portman Road, the home of Wardley's beloved English soccer favourites Ipswich, on June 7 after American contender Jarrell Miller withdrew from their planned title bout reporting a shoulder injury.
Now, British promoter Eddie Hearn has seen the chance for his unbeaten Queensland prospect Huni to step in as a replacement, calling it "a fantastic opportunity" for the 26-year-old.
"I really think that is a fight where you will see the best of him," Hearn told reporters. "I'm really excited about his future."
Wardley's fight with Miller had been set up as a stepping stone for the winner to enter the division's elite, with the likes of Bulgaria's 43-year-old WBA heavyweight champion Kubrat Pulev, Britain's Daniel Dubois or, even more ambitiously, the division's Ukrainian maestro Oleksandr Usyk, awaiting.
But on Wednesday it was revealed Miller had pulled out after sustaining an injury in training camp.
The 30-year-old Wardley is still unbeaten with 18 wins and a draw, and represents a huge step up in class for Huni, who's 12-0, with seven KOs, after a TKO win over South African Shaun Potgieter in January, his third consecutive second-round stoppage.
