‘He’s angry’: How Gout Gout really feels after being upstaged
@Source: news.com.au
That’s the truth the sprint sensation’s coach Di Sheppard has revealed after watching Australia’s fastest man Lachie Kennedy upset her teenage pupil. Gout, 17, was the headline act at the sold-out meeting at the Lakeside Stadium and the crowd was treated to a show when Kennedy set a new personal best time of 20.26 seconds to hold off Gout’s run of 20.30 seconds in the 200m event. It wasn’t the show the crowd was expecting, such is the hype and pressure the Queensland high school student is under after he blew the world away in December with a freakish 20.04 seconds run at the Australian All Schools Championships. Gout and Kennedy were all class after the race, embracing each other and their fellow competitors. According to Code Sports, Gout was also all smiles and respectfully humble as he interacted with fans and journalists after the race. However, that was all just a mask, it appears. Seppard told ABC’s 7.30 after the race: “I know he’s quite angry about that. “Everything we’ve done is a step forward, it’s all about learning how to cope with this environment as well, so I think he’s doing a great job. “Just remember he’s a 17-year-old boy … and he’s got a bright future.” You can watch Sheppard’s interview in the video player above. Sheppard’s comments were putting it lightly, according to Gout’s manager James Templeton. The agent told Code Sports: “He’s pissed off, which is good”. Gout told reporters after the race the result has poured fuel on his motivational fire. “What is going through my head is seeing what I can gain from this experience and knowing what I can do in training to improve and keep pushing to nationals,” Gout said. “This is great, this is what you live for, this environment, the hype, the people, the expectation, the people, this is sport right. This is what I go to sleep for. “The experience is second to none, this is only something you can get from a big meet. It feels great having everyone saying my name, everyone screaming my name at the top of their lungs. “It is definitely great and is something not a lot of people can experience so I am definitely taking it step by step and enjoying the moment. “Coming second is something you have to experience, it puts fuel to my fire so when I get to training I work a bit harder and I will be better at nationals.” Kennedy’s run was fresh from his silver-medal performance in the 60m sprint at world athletics indoor championships. “I just wanted to give him (Gout) a good race, it wouldn’t be fun if he just destroyed everyone,” Kennedy told reporters. “I’m sorry if I did spoil it a little bit but what a great race you can’t be upset watching something like that.” The 21-year-old’s win on Saturday sets up a mouth-watering rivalry between the pair heading into future meets and potentially the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. However, Gout’s biggest critic is having none of those suggestions. American athletics analyst Erin Brown, the runner behind the popular “Erin Spider Brown” TikTok page, has proudly declared “I told you so” after seeing Gout’s run in Melbourne on Saturday. Despite Kennedy’s massive personal best, all eyes were still on Gout after the race. That is a big problem in the eyes of Brown. The former collegiate athlete took to TikTok to rub it in Australia’s face, citing previous cases where young athletes have been dubbed “the next Usain Bolt”. Photos from immediately after the race show he may be right. “This is y’all’s next Usain Bolt,” he said with a photo of Gout as his backdrop. “Every person y’all have ever deemed the next Usain Bolt in track and field has ruined them. “They did it with Matthew Boland. He did a 9.98sec windy time and he was the next Usain Bolt. Christopher Taylor from Jamaica in 2015 - the next Usain Bolt. He’s running faster than Bolt ran at his age. Trayvon Bromell — the next Usain Bolt. He’s going to be the next Usain Bolt. He’s going to take over. He’s going to take over from where Bolt left off. “Erriyon Knighton. The next Usain Bolt. He’s running faster than Bolt ran at his age. “I could see if I was lying, hating or making things up. But these people in Australia just made an hour long documentary saying that bro is the next Usain Bolt and he will be at the Olympics and he will be at the finals and he will get a medal. Instead of just letting the kid be a kid and letting him develop.” Brown went on to say: “He’s on the bottom tier of the pros so why hype him up and put unreasonable expectations on the kid. It never goes good. It never does. I’ve always said for a professional he’s not that good.” Brown has been one of Gout’s biggest critics even before he went to America for a special training camp with gold medallist Noah Lyles in the United States and was first titled “the next Usain Bolt” last year. Brown’s criticism will be just another case of fuel being poured on the fire.
