It was 2017, and Kaylee Rose was in her junior year of high school when one day she was lying on her trampoline in her backyard. A girl, around 7 or 8 years old, approached and innocently asked if she could use the trampoline as well.
At the time, Rose, then 16, tells PEOPLE that the house next door was known to have various family members coming and going to stay as needed. So, she didn’t even know who was living there, let alone if it was a little girl. She thinks the girl must have come through the grass that connects her house to the neighbor’s.
"We started jumping for a while, talking and laughing," Rose, now 24, says. "Then we moved to my driveway to play some basketball, maybe kick a soccer ball. After almost an hour, she asked to see my room. I was a teenager myself and wasn’t quite thinking of her as a little kid who should be sent back home. Instead, I thought, ‘Oh! Of course.’ "
Once inside her house, Rose noticed the girl wandering around her room, looking at her décor and some makeup she had left out. The girl then asked if she could do Rose’s makeup, to which Rose replied, "Yes, girl!" The girl then proceeded to paint the entire upper half of Rose's face with blue eyeshadow. Afterward, the girl spotted Rose’s pink Polaroid camera and asked if they could take pictures. They each took one, then signed and dated the photos with markers.
However, not long after, Rose suddenly heard a loud, repetitive bang on her door. When she answered it — her face still covered in blue eyeshadow — there stood multiple cops with police dogs.

"They asked me if I’d seen a little girl who lived next door," Rose recalls. "At this moment, it all clicked. I looked behind them and saw a swarm of 20 to 30 people filing into my driveway. It was a search and rescue team, made up of the girl’s entire family, other neighbors and policemen. I went and got the girl in shock and explained the giant misunderstanding."
"I don’t remember talking to the family at all, only the police," she adds. "As the crowd started to thin out, my dad pulled in, just getting home from work. He was also in shock and helped me talk to the police. Pretty much within 5 to 10 minutes, everyone was gone."
Recently, Rose was sitting in her car, waiting to leave to pick up a friend for a St. Patrick's Day party. While in her car, she looked in the direction of her neighbor's house, wondering what ever happened to that girl. That’s when she was inspired to post about the misunderstanding on TikTok.
She filmed a video, then posted it the next morning and forgot about it for a few hours. But when she came back, she noticed the video had gone viral.
“ "and we took polaroids” sounds so bad even tho it was innocent 😭," one person commented.
"okay STOP because I did the same exact thing as that little girl except I was 5 and instead of a teenager and a trampoline I asked an old lady to help plant flowers in her garden," someone else wrote.
Another person replied, "this is literally the funniest thing I’ve ever heard."
"For the most part, all the comments were humorous in nature, or people who grew up in the '80s and '90s sharing how common this type of thing was back then," Rose says. "Only 1 or 2 comments hinted at the fact that I was very dumb for this, which at 24 years old, I do realize. There were a few comments saying, 'Girl, she kidnapped YOU,' or 'If anything, they owe you babysitting money.' To me, that stood out because it was true. I was essentially letting this girl do whatever she wanted as if we were classmates hanging out after school."
Since that day, Rose says no one has addressed the situation. She mentions that the original owners of the house still say "hi" to her when they’re in town. As for the girl, Rose never hung out with her again and doesn’t even remember seeing her after that day.
"My dad said he remembers seeing her a few times after that, outside on her property, playing on a tire swing. But for some reason, between leaving for college a year-and-a-half later and not paying attention, I have no memory," Rose says.
"I hope people just find humor in things they did as teenagers and share those crazy stories that feel like a fever dream," she say of seeing her story go viral. "To a mass audience like TikTok, there will be plenty of people out there who find your story funny and even relatable."
