A US woman who bungled a murder plot in Birmingham while acting as an 'assassin' has been jailed for 30 years. Aimee Betro tried to shoot Sikander Ali outside his home in Measham Grove, Yardley , on the evening of September 7, 2019. But the victim managed to escape after her gun jammed. The murder plan had been hatched amid an ongoing dispute between two families. The 45-year-old, from Wisconsin, had been 'recruited' by lover Mohammed Nazir who she met on a dating app. He also embroiled her in a second plot to frame another man as a gun smuggler. Following a trial Betro was found guilty to conspiracy to murder, possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence and fraudulent evasion of a prohibition. Today, Thursday, August 21, Judge Simon Drew KC told her: "I accept Nazir recruited you but you were the gunwoman and the person who was prepared to fire the gun. "As a result you showed you were willing to carry out the killing yourself." He ruled out a life sentence or an extended sentence, instead handing Betro 30 years and telling her she would serve two-thirds of the term before being eligible for release. Wearing a black cardigan over a white top and her hair in plaits, she showed no emotion as her punishment was confirmed. Betro simply nodded her head before being led down to the cells by three female dock officers. The primary target of the murder plot had been Aslat Mahumud who owned Noreen Sehere Boutique on Alum Rock Road in Birmingham . On July 21, 2018 there was a violent incident at the shop in which he, along with Mohammed Aslam and his son Nazir, were injured. Later that evening the windows of Aslam and Nazir's home in Derby were smashed. Judge Drew went on: "I'm quite satisfied that was the motive and motivation for what took place in September 2019. "In particular, Aslam and Nazir planned a revenge attack on Mr Mahumad and his family, and you were recruited to conduct what was intended to be an execution. "How and why you came to be recruited for this task remains unclear." Betro and Nazir stayed together when she flew to the UK for Christmas and New Year in 2018. She visited again in May but they did not meet up. Betro then travelled to the UK for a third time on August 22, 2019. Within a few days she hired an expensive Mercedes which was involved in a collision with two vehicles as part of a likely insurance scam carried out by Nazir. Betro travelled around the country including return trips to Derby. Judge Drew said: "I am quite satisfied you had been recruited to Nazir's (murder) scheme by September 6. "By that day he had obtained access to a firearm to carry out his plan and a video of it being fired, just outside Derby, was sent to his phone. "Whether you were present at the demonstration or it was recorded so it could be shown to you, matters not. "By that time, you had agreed to carry out the shooting." He added: "Why you agreed to join in this scheme is also not clear. "However, it appears that you were acting out of infatuation or love." Betro had bought burner phones and made failed attempts to meet Mr Mahumad by pretending to be interested in a car he was selling. But after he became suspicious and refused, the plan was hatched to target him at his home in Measham Grove, Yardley. Betro drove to the address on September 7 in another Mercedes she had recently purchased. By the time Sikander Ali arrived home shortly after 8pm she had disguised herself in a niqab and burka. Judge Drew said: "As soon as he got out of his car you approached him on foot and when you were about six to seven yards away you tried to shoot him. "Fortunately for him, the gun jammed and he was able to get back into his car and reverse out of Measham Grove." Betro also fled the scene and later text threatening messages to Mr Mahumad, challenging him to meet her at Asda in Small Heath . Then, shortly after 1am the next day, she returned to Measham Grove and fired three bullets into his home, which was unoccupied. Betro flew back to America the next day, quickly followed by Nazir. He returned to the UK on October 13, 2019. A few days later Betro sent three parcels containing firearms and ammunition to a man named Faris Quayum in Derby. It was all part of another devious plot by Nazir to frame him as a gun smuggler, which was ultimately rumbled by authorities. Paul Lewis KC, defending, argued there had been 'amateurish' elements to the murder plan. He said Betro was of previous good character, meaning she had never committed a crime before, and that she had been a 'model prisoner'. Mr Lewis added: "She is likely to find incarceration particularly difficult because all her friends and family are in America. "She has virtually had no visits other than from her lawyers while in custody. "It is likely in future while serving her sentence she will receive very few visitors again." Nazir, in his 30s, was sentenced to 32 years in November last year for his involvement, while his father Aslam, in his 50s, received ten years.
