The Odisha government has invested crores of rupees in modern astroturf hockey training centres in each block of Sundargarh district yet the facility at Paramadhi under Koida block remains largely unused sources said on Tuesday. Its remote location deep in the jungle and devoid of adequate transport links has led to deep concerns and calls for administrative intervention. What troubles hockey trainees? Despite being equipped with cutting-edge astroturf pitches the facility which opened in 2023 in Choradhara panchayat is situated 40 kilometres from the block headquarters. This location and the lack of transport infrastructure are the primary deterrents for players from other panchayats who are keen to benefit from the centre. Coaching staff and necessary equipment are already in place but due to these constraints many aspiring players continue to practice in makeshift grounds with minimal resources. Locals argue that addressing connectivity issues could spark greater interest and involvement among young athletes. The funding for this initiative sourced from District Mineral Foundation DMF funds has been substantial. However coaches and security personnel at the centre have expressed their dissatisfaction suggesting that better transportation could significantly increase participation. The State governments initiative to spread such facilities across all blocks is admirable but the unsuitable placement threatens their effectiveness and acceptance.
