Holi is a major festival celebrated by Hindus worldwide with great enthusiasm. Everyone wants to enjoy Holi to the fullest, with music, dance, and delicious festive treats like gujia. On this occasion, people apply colours to each other and celebrate with joy. However, amidst the excitement, many tend to neglect their health, leading to problems after the festival.
Dr Sonia Rawat, Director of the Preventive Health and Wellness Department at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, told News18 about some common mistakes people should avoid during Holi to prevent having to visit a doctor soon after the festival.
Dr Rawat stated that using good-quality, herbal colours is crucial. Chemical-based colours can harm the skin and eyes, causing irritation, swelling, and infections. Many people buy colours without checking their quality, a mistake that should be avoided.
The doctor also warned against consuming alcohol and other intoxicants during Holi, as they can lead to dehydration and serious health issues. Excessive alcohol consumption can raise blood pressure, cause headaches, vomiting, and even damage the liver. This is particularly dangerous for people with diabetes. Therefore, it is best to avoid alcohol or consume it in moderation.
Dr Rawat advises against excessive consumption of sweets during Holi, as they contain high amounts of sugar, which can be harmful, especially for diabetes patients. Festive foods like puris and fried snacks can cause digestive issues.
People with chronic illnesses often forget to take their medication during celebrations, which can negatively impact their health. Patients with heart, kidney, liver, or diabetes-related conditions should be mindful of their medication.
People should also avoid staying wet for long periods. The changing weather can increase the risk of colds and coughs. If any health issues arise, it is advisable to seek medical attention.
