OSAKA -- Hotland Holdings is refurbishing machiya townhouses in Kyoto, turning them into restaurants as it looks to draw tourists into a lesser known part of the city. The Japanese restaurant operator has a number of brands, including octopus dumpling specialist Tsukiji Gindaco.
Hotland subsidiary Fun International is in charge of the project, which started in 2023 in an area northeast of Karasuma Station on the Hankyu Railway line. The company will open its fourth machiya-turned-restaurant this year in the quarter, and its seventh in the city overall. Other restaurants housed in machiya include Manten, a shish kabob restaurant, sukiyaki diner Hokuto, and Sushi Roman.
