Houston Open: PGA Tour Fan Favorite Needs Top 50 for Masters Spot, Catches Fire
@Source: newsweek.com
Winning and placing high in any tournament on the PGA Tour is a prestigious honor, but many players are focused on qualifying for The Masters in the last few weeks leading into the first major of the season.One of those players is Michael Kim. Many golf fans will be familiar with Kim based on his presence on X, formerly Twitter, but Kim has been grinding hard to get to Augusta National.Heading into the Texas Children's Houston Open, Kim needed a top 50 finish to officially qualify.That mark was in question after an even-par 70 in the first round on Thursday, but the South Korea native wasted no time getting to work on Friday. Kim teed off on the back nine and made birdies on Nos. 13, 14, 17 and 18 to notch a 4-under 31 on his first nine of the day.The front nine didn't go quite as smoothly, but Kim immediately responded to a bogey on the sixth with back-to-back birdies. In the end, he signed for a 5-under 65 and now sits in a tie for 12th place with the afternoon wave still on the course.There is still work to do to secure the top 50 finish, but Kim is now safely inside the cut line and will have the chance to seal the deal over the final 36 holes of the tournament.If Kim does finish the job and qualify for The Masters, it will be the result of tons of hard work this season. The Houston Open is his eighth tournament in a row, dating back to the Waste Management Phoenix Open at the start of February.During that time, Kim recorded a T-2 in Phoenix and then a solo fourth place finish at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, so his recent form certainly suggests that he should be at Augusta.If he can continue that into the weekend in Houston, expect to see Kim amongst the Azaleas in Georgia in just 13 days time.More Golf: Scottie Scheffler Makes PGA Tour History at Houston Open, Again
