How Can Gujarat Titans Finish In Top Two After Defeat Against Lucknow Super Giants?
@Source: news18.com
Table-toppers Gujarat Titans faced Lucknow Super Giants in the 64th league match of IPL 2025 on Thursday (May 22), but they suffered a shocking defeat by 33 runs in front of home fans at Narendra Modi Stadium. Captain Shubman Gill’s decision to bowl first backfired as the visitors rode on Mitchell Marsh’s maiden IPL century to post a total of 235 runs on the board for the loss of two wickets, which, despite Shahrukh Khan’s 57-run knock from just 29 balls, GT failed to chase down.
The defeat at Narendra Modi Stadium was GT’s fourth loss of the ongoing season, but with 18 points from 13 matches, they remain at the No. 1 position in the IPL 2025 points table.
Gujarat Titans would like to maintain the No. 1 position in the coming days as well to secure a place in the first qualifier, which is scheduled to take place at Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur next Thursday (May 29).
Titans will finish as table toppers if they beat Chennai Super Kings in their last league match on May 25 and Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings lose at least one of their remaining two league matches.
If that happens, then GT will top the table with 20 points, and RCB and PBKS can’t finish with more than 19 points.
But if GT lose against CSK, then they will surely not finish as table toppers. However, they can finish 2nd, but for that, Shubman Gill’s men have to hope that RCB lose their next two league matches (against Sunrisers Hyderabad May 23 and against Lucknow Super Giants on May 27) and PBKS win against Mumbai Indians on May 26 in Jaipur.
Gujarat Titans will finish third if Punjab Kings and RCB win at least one of their remaining two league matches and they lose against Chennai Super Kings.
If RCB win at least one of their upcoming two matches, PBKS beat GT, MI beat PBKS and CSK beat GT, then Shubman Gill’s men will end the league stage campaign in 4th position and face the third-placed team in the eliminator match in Mullanpur on May 30.
