How Can Mumbai Indians Finish In Top 2 And Make It To 1st Qualifier?
@Source: news18.com
Mumbai Indians beat Delhi Capitals by 59 runs in their 13th league match of IPL 2025 played at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday, May 12. The win over DC in front of home fans helped MI confirm their place in the IPL 2025 playoffs.
As of now, MI have 16 points from 13 matches, and they are fourth in the IPL 2025 points table.
After confirming their place in the playoffs, Mumbai Indians now would like to finish in the top two and book a place in the first qualifier, which is set to be played at Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur on Thursday, May 29.
According to IPL rules, the top two teams feature in the first qualifier, and the winner qualifies directly for the final, whereas the losing team faces the winner of the eliminator match in the second qualifier for a place in the summit clash.
How can MI finish in the top 2?
Mumbai Indians will finish as the IPL 2025 table toppers if Hardik Pandya’s men win their last league match against Punjab Kings in Jaipur on May 26 and the likes of Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and PBKS lose their remaining two league matches.
In such a scenario, MI will finish as toppers with 18 points and GT second with 18 points. MI’s net run rate is superior to GT’s, and it will help him finish above GT.
If GT win at least one of their remaining two league matches – vs LSG in Lucknow on May 22 and vs CSK in Ahmedabad on May 25 – then MI can’t finish above them in the points table.
MI will finish second if they beat PBKS, RCB lose both their remaining league matches and PBKS also lose against Delhi Capitals.
If RCB and PBKS win one of their remaining two league matches, then despite defeating PBKS in their last league match, Mumbai Indians will finish fourth.
RCB will face Sunrisers Hyderabad in their 13th league match on Friday in Lucknow and then take on Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Stadium on May 27. On the other hand, PBKS’ next two matches are against Delhi Capitals in Jaipur on May 24 and against Mumbai Indians on May 26.
Mumbai Indians last finished as table toppers in the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League and went on to win the title as well.
