How DLS Method Works In Cricket?
@Source: news18.com
Punjab Kings are facing Mumbai Indians in the second qualifier match of IPL 2025 on Sunday, June 1. The high-stakes match is taking place at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer has won the toss and opted to field first. The match has been delayed by more than 100 minutes due to rain. Due to rain threat, DLS (Duckworth-Lewis-Stern) Method is likely to come into play during the second half of the match. How does the DLS method work in cricket? The Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method is a statistical approach used in cricket to set a fair target score for the team batting second when a match is interrupted. It takes into account the remaining overs and wickets in hand to calculate the resources available to each team. Here’s how it works: 1. Resources: Each team starts with 100% of their resources, which comprise the overs they have to bowl and the wickets they have in hand. 2. Percentage of Resources Remaining: As the match progresses, the resource percentage decreases as overs are bowled and wickets are lost. This decrease is not linear; it is exponential, meaning the percentage drops faster as more wickets are lost and overs are used up. 3. DLS Table: The DLS method uses a pre-calculated table (or a computer program) that provides the resource percentage for every combination of overs remaining and wickets lost. 4. Calculating the Revised Target: The target for the team batting second is adjusted based on the difference in resources between the two teams. The formula is: Team 2’s revised target = Team 1’s score x (Team 2’s resources / Team 1’s resources).
