How Mumbai Indians Can Qualify For IPL 2025 Playoffs After Defeat Against GT?
@Source: news18.com
Mumbai Indians suffered a heartbreaking defeat by three wickets against Gujarat Titans in the rain-hit IPL 2025 match played at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday, May 6. The Mumbai-based franchise needed to defend 15 runs in the final over of the match to extend their winning run to seven matches in a row but Deepak Chahar failed to achieve the objective.
The defeat in front of home fans was a bitter pill to swallow for the five-time champions, and the first defeat in IPL 2025 since the 12-run loss against RCB on April 7, 2025, has now put MI’s playoffs qualification chances in danger.
As of now, the Mumbai Indians have 14 points from 12 matches, and they are fourth in the league table. MI will finish in the top four if they win their remaining two league matches.
If they win one and lose one, then they will have to remain dependent on the result of other teams as well.
If Mumbai lose both their matches, then they will get knocked out of the playoffs race.
MI’s qualification scenario
Win two matches – Through
Win 1 and lose 1 – Depend on result of PBKS, DC, KKR and LSG
Lose both – Out
Mumbai Indians will finish in the top two if they win their remaining two league matches by a big margin and not more than one team finish the league stage with more than 18 points. As of now, GT and RCB have 16 points to their credit after 11 matches, and if they win two of their remaining three league matches, then they will reach 20 points, which MI can’t match.
The teams which finish in the top two face each other in the first qualifier, and according to IPL rules, the winner of that match will directly qualify for the final, and the loser will face the winner of the eliminator match between the third and fourth placed teams in the second qualifier for a spot in the final.
MI’s upcoming matches in IPL 2025
Mumbai Indians will face Punjab Kings in their 13th league match of IPL 2025 on Sunday, May 11, at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala. As of now, with 15 points after 11 matches, PBKS are third in the points table. MI’s final league match is scheduled to take place at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on May 15 against Delhi Capitals. MI have defeated DC once in the ongoing season, and they would like to repeat the same show next week as well.
