How “Peacemaker” brought season 2's NSFW orgy to life: 'The most graphic day I've ever had on a set'

This article contains spoilers for Peacemaker's season 2 premiere, "The Ties That Grind." Bet you've never see that on TV before. While Peacemaker continuously pushed the boundary of what could be shown onscreen all throughout its first season, the season 2 premiere took the term NSFW to new heights with a massive orgy scene so graphic that it shocked even the cast. Chris Smith, a.k.a. Peacemaker (John Cena), fell into a depression after getting ruthlessly rejected and humiliated at his audition for the Justice Gang, so he threw a drug- and alcohol-fueled sex party in his home. In every room, on every piece of furniture, even every surface, there were naked people furiously and enthusiastically having sex. It went on for so long that John Economos (Steve Agee), who was sent by A.R.G.U.S. to surveil Peacemaker's pocket universe activity, got more than an eyeful while peeking in the window. Peacemaker star Agee tells Entertainment Weekly that his character's shock in that moment as he sees the orgy was genuine, because it was his real reaction during filming. "It's definitely the most graphic day I've ever had on a set, and I was just an observer," Agee says with a laugh. "You're the first person to ask about this — I'm shocked that nobody has mentioned this. It was insane!" Agee remembers getting the script for the premiere, but he had no idea what was in store for him in that scene. "You get a script and it says, 'John Economos sneaks up to the house and looks in the window, and there's this orgy happening,' and it's not really specific and detailed," Agee explains. "It says, 'There are people having sex,' and in my head I'm like, 'There's only so much you can show on TV, so it'll be fine.' And then they didn't tell me what I was going to see, and my reaction is legitimate. I walk up to a window and there's like 30 people in a room having sex, and it is a graphic scene." What really shocked Agee was the equality of nudity among the background actors. "It's not just boobs on women, it's everything, full frontal, back-al, upside down — oh my God," he says. "And I was so f---ing shocked. Pardon my French. God, wow. I really can't think of a time I've seen something like that on TV... I've been around a lot of violent stuff, I've done horror movies and stuff where there's blood, but this is the first time, as a comedic actor — I don't get to see stuff like that very often. Slash ever." The days they filmed the orgy, it was a closed set out of respect for the actors who were nude. And creator James Gunn admits that "it was actually pretty easy" to shoot despite how wild it looks on screen. "I've heard old-school directors complaining about intimacy coordinators, but I think that they're the best thing that has been given to us as filmmakers in the past 20 years," Gunn tells EW. "We had a great intimacy coordinator on set during those days, and it made it really easy to direct those scenes, to allow people to do what they were comfortable with, but also really go for it. And we had a bunch of great — they aren't background actors because they're foreground for much of it, but people who were really committed to it, just a wonderful group of people willing to show this insane chapter from Christopher Smith's story." Gunn loves how those scenes aren't just for shock value, but rather to show just how far Peacemaker has fallen at the start of this season. "We hear a lot about how sexually debaucherous Chris is in the first season, and in this episode, we see a little hint of that," Gunn says. "He uses sex and drugs to escape his feelings, and that's what he's doing in this episode. He's sort of relapsing, in a way. He's gotten better, he's grown, he's more vulnerable, and he's sort of backtracking in that moment." It all leads to a very drunk and high Peacemaker using his Quantum Unfolding Chamber to discover a parallel universe where his brother, Keith (David Denman), is still alive, and their father, Auggie (Robert Patrick), is actually a great father. This universe's father and son trio all seem to be happy together. But then Peacemaker ruins it by killing his other self. Oops. Peacemaker season 2 debuts new episodes Thursdays on HBO Max.
