How soldiers foiled attack on Mogadishu cantonment in Abuja

From Molly Kilete, Abuja Soldiers stationed at the Mogadishu cantonment, popularly known as Abacha barracks, Monday foiled an attack on the barrack by a suicide bomber. The incident which happened at about 3pm, Monday evening, under the pedestrian bridge which also serves as bus stop, led the death of the suicide bomber, and injured two other persons. Daily Sun, gathered that the deceased suicide bomber whose intention was to gain access into the barracks was detected by eagle eyed military police personnel after he alighted from a commercial vehicle, a golf car, which is commonly used by terrorists for their operation. Upon alighting from the vehicle, the suicide bomber Laden with with planted Improvised Explosive Device(IED), attempted to infiltrate into Mogadishu Cantonment close to the checkpoint where passengers do drop before walking to take keke stand inside the Cantonment. It was gathered that When his movement became suspicious, he was stopped by the Military Police personnel on duty who asked him to move back for proper identification. He was said to have moved few meters away when the IED he was carrying exploded killing him on the spot and injured 2 others. The explosion caused pandemonium in the area as people ran for safety while the soldiers from the Explosive Ordinance Device(EOD), rushed to the scene to detonate whatever that was left from the IED. The Injured victims were rushed to the Defence Medical center where they are currently receiving treatment by a team of medical personnel who also arrived the scene. The EOD team consisting of personnel of the Nigerian Army and Nigerian police, cordon off the scene of the incident upon arrival for scanning while corps of the victim was moved further investigations. Examination carried out on the body of the suicide bomber, showed that he tied the IED, around his waist. The body has been taken for further investigation. Reacting to the incident, the Nigerian Army, Authorities of the Nigerian Army, called on residents of the Federal Capital Territory not to panic over the e explosion but go about their legitimate duties. It said there is no cause for alarm as the situation has been brought under control. Confirming the incident, the Federal Capital Territory(FCT), police command, in a statement said “On May 26th, 2025 at approximately 2:50 PM, the FCT Police Command received a distress report regarding an explosion along Mararaba-Nyanya bypass. Upon receipt of the report, officers of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit were immediately deployed to the scene. The affected area was swiftly cordoned off for clearance and analysis to ensure the safety of commuters and residents. One male victim was rescued at the scene and promptly taken to the hospital, where he is currently receiving medical attention. A comprehensive investigation has commenced, including detailed forensic analysis, to ascertain the exact cause and nature of the explosion. The FCT Police Command urges members of the public to remain calm and go about their lawful activities without fear, as there is currently no cause for alarm.
