The Guardians After capturing 42 comeback victories in last season’s deep run, the Guardians (1-0) opened up the 2025 campaign with some more magic and a 7-4 victory over the Royals in 10 innings. In a matchup filled with twists and turns, Cleveland executed a massive pickle play in the bottom of the eighth inning after Royals runners were on the corners with nobody out. That brought a double play and an evasion of danger fitting for some Opening Day drama. Kyle Manzardo delivered a memorable Opening Day performance as he tied for the franchise record with the most RBI’s (4) on Opening Day, proving the spring training hype was real. The breakout showing also eases concerns of Cleveland’s firepower after the trade of All-Star slugger Josh Naylor. The starting pitching was thrown a curveball after Tanner Bibee came down with a stomach bug hours before the first pitch. Ben Lively slid into the role, allowing four hits and three runs while striking out three in five innings of work. The bullpen picked up where they left off as Cade Smith, Tim Herrin, Hunter Gaddis and Emmanuel Clase all touched the mound. Clase got the win despite allowing a sac fly while Paul Sewald got the save. Guardians players to watch Playing in his first Opening Day game, Manzardo went 3-for-4 with one home run, a triple, a double and four RBI. He notched a two-RBI double in the 10th, which cushioned the lead to 7-4. All-Star third baseman Jose Ramirez tabbed a sac fly in the opener. The Guardians offensive centerpiece tallied 39 home runs, 41 stolen bases and 118 RBI last season with a .872 OPS. All-Star left fielder Steven Kwan went 2-for-4 with an RBI double, helping Cleveland take a 5-4 lead in the 10th. Kwan notched 14 home runs and 44 RBI with a 12 stolen bases while batting .292, including a .793 OPS last season. Kansas City (0-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a blast from Vinnie Pasquantino. They gave away that lead in the sixth only to position themselves nicely in the eighth. But the Royals’ bad baserunning took away the golden opportunity. After the three-run shot in the third, Kansas City did not score again until a Micheal Massey sac fly in the ninth, forcing extra innings. The Royals finished with seven hits and one blown chance. Royals players to watch Pasquantino homered with a three-run shot in the third, kicking off the season with a bang. He tallied 19 home runs and 97 RBI with a .262 batting average last season. Injuries have kept the rising star from making a leap as he missed the final month of last season with a broken right thumb. All-Star shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. was held in check with one hit, one run and three strikeouts. Witt Jr. had a .332 batting average with 32 home runs and 109 RBI last season. All-Star catcher Salvador Perez tallied a hit and two strikeouts. He finished last season with 27 home runs and 104 RBI, while batting .271.
