The British and Irish Lions' latest series is set to commence on Friday night with Andy Farrell at the helm as they square off against Argentina in Dublin. In a momentous occasion for rugby fans , the prestigious touring team will face Australia, signifying the much-anticipated return of full-capacity stadiums for the first time since the 2017 tour of New Zealand. Dublin's Aviva Stadium plays host to an historic first Lions match against Los Pumas, setting the stage for a thrilling six-week rugby extravaganza. Contending for the 1888 Cup, the fixture honours the long-standing tradition of launching the tour with a warm-up game on home turf. The previous such encounter took place in 2021 when the Lions tackled Japan at Murrayfield, where Alun Wyn Jones infamously suffered a dislocated shoulder before making an extraordinary comeback only 18 days later to lead the tour. Lions CEO Ben Calveley spoke on the significance of kicking off the tour in Ireland's capital, reports Wales Online . "The opportunity to play in Dublin at Aviva Stadium in front of more than 50,000 Lions fans will make for a great occasion and the perfect send‐off," he commented. "British and Irish Lions tours have a rich heritage built over 130 years of touring but alongside our strong history which we are very proud of, it is important that we look for ways in which to evolve our tours. "This pre‐tour fixture is one such example of this and builds on the success of the pre‐tour fixture against Japan at Murrayfield in 2021 which was a resounding success." Lions fans are integral to the magic of a tour and the upcoming fixture at the Aviva Stadium allows those not travelling to Australia to witness the action first-hand, a point emphasised by Lions officials: "British and Irish Lions fans are a core part of what makes a great Lions tour. This fixture in Aviva Stadium gives fans who may not be travelling to Australia the opportunity to see the Lions in action which is really important to us."
