Junail Zafar Khan was playing cricket for his Old Concordians side against rivals Prince Alfred Old Collegians at Concordia College in Adelaide when he collapsed at about 4pm ACDT.
Paramedics’ efforts to revive the man, aged in his 40s, were unsuccessful.
According to date from The Bureau of Meteorology, temperatures in the South Australian capital were still above 40C at the time.
On Saturday, the Old Collegians released a statement confirming Mr Khan’s death.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of a valued member of the Old Concordians’ Cricket Club, who tragically suffered a medical episode while playing on the Concordia College oval today,” the statement read.
“Despite the best efforts of paramedics, he sadly did not survive.
“Thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with his family, friends and teammates during this difficult time.”
Mr Khan moved to Adelaide from Pakistan in 2013 to work in the tech industry, the Advertiser reported.
Tributes have since poured in for Mr Khan, with fellow cricket player and friend Hasan Anjum describing him as a kind and generous person who enjoyed helping people.
“It’s a huge loss, he was destined for very big things in his life,” Mr Anjum told the Advertiser.
Najam Hassan, who was a close friend to Mr Khan, said he was a “gem of a person”.
It has been reported that under Adelaide Turf Cricket Association bylaws, games must be cancelled if temperatures exceed 42C during a match, though games can continue in up to 40C heat under special playing conditions.
Adelaide was far from the only city gripped with blistering heat through the weekend, with temperatures nearing 40C in Sydney and parts of Victoria.
