Hutch gangster in hot water after taking out staircase & gates before house seized as thug ‘very sore’ over CAB grab

GANGSTER James ‘Mago’ Gately has landed himself in hot water after removing the staircase and front gates to his home before it was officially seized.
The Criminal Assets Bureau moved in on the north Dublin property after Gately along with his partner Charlene Lam and three children had been ordered to vacate it.
The gaff, at 77 Glin Drive in Coolock, was confiscated from the senior Hutch associate after Dublin’s High Court found that it was “overwhelmingly” the proceeds of crime, as was a 132 VW Golf and a plush €4,400 Rolex.
A last ditch effort to stay in it for two further years - claiming their eldest boy’s preparation for his Leaving Cert would be impacted - was slapped down by the High Court before Christmas.
But 38-year-old Gately - who the Kinahan cartel tried to murder twice in a two-month period in 2017 - may find himself targeted by CAB once more after fixtures had been removed.
It is understood that CAB are considering raising the matter before the High Court later this month.
A source said: “Would you expect anything less from the likes of Gately? He’s a career criminal but the case has left him absolutely broke and he’s very sore over the whole thing.”
At least two CCTV cameras, fitted to each side of the front of the semi-detached house in north Dublin, were also missing but it’s understood he may have been entitled to swipe them.
Their house was first purchased in 2013 for €125,000 but was upgraded and renovated for a cost of up to €440,000.
This saw a large two-story extension at the back during a “very high standard” renovation.
The house was “radically” reconfigured, with a new fitted kitchen and an island, along with a solar panel on the roof, installed.
It was also replumbed and rewired with a new heating system put in.The front and the rear gardens were landscaped and a new rear patio was laid outside. It had been fitted with a reinforced door and CCTV throughout.
'EXOTIC LIFESTYLE'
They also lived an “exotic lifestyle” and they were virtually never in the State, Mr Justice Alexander Owens ruled.
He added that they spent their time in airport terminals or on cruises on the South Seas and on the Caribbean.
Some of the couple’s trips included a three-week cruise to Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Korea and Japan in 2018, the Caribbean the year beforehand, while other holidays in 2021 saw the pair jet to Barcelona in Spain and Lisbon in Portugal.
Other luxury spending included jewellery and plastic surgery.
PROCEEDS OF CRIME
The judge said he examined bank accounts from 2013 to 2019 and he said the mortgage payments made up until that point were found to be the proceeds of crime, aside from a small sum.
Gately had claimed the hair and beauty business he supposedly ran with senior Kinahan cartel thug Barry Finnegan - before they became bitter enemies in the feud - funded the mortgage and renovation of his home.
In submissions to the High Court, CAB said that Gately is a leading member of the Hutch Organised Crime Gang, involved in armed robberies and importation of drugs.
CAB also submitted to the High Court that he was involved in a number of armed robberies himself.
It alleged that he was linked to a number of murders, including that of Aidan Byrne and Eamon ‘The Don’ Dunne in 2010 along with the killing of David Byrne at the Regency Hotel in 2016.
Gately was never convicted of any of these offences.
Mago was targeted in April and May 2017 by two separate Kinahan hit teams who were attempting to claimed a €125,000 bounty which had been placed on his head by the mob.
