'I don't mind them visiting, it's if they end up staying here I don't agree with'

Residents in Morecambe have hit out about caravans parking along the promenade following a police crackdown on the trend. Lancashire Constabulary issued fines to some caravan owners last month, and even removed some vehicles 'due to safety concerns', LancsLive reports. In a statement released following their operation, the force said they were issuing consequences for those who leave their caravans 'unattached and unattended for some time'. Now, a number of locals have shared their annoyance about caravans obstructing the roads along the picturesque bay, with people uniting in their opinion that the area is 'not a caravan site'. One woman shared her distaste for the caravans who park up for long periods of time. The 77-year-old said: "I was born in Morecambe and I don't mind them coming, what gets me is when they stay here for a long time and when they park over a drain and tip things down it. "I'm not objecting to it they bring in a lot of money but the council should be setting up somewhere for them to stay and charge them for it. "One night it can be empty and it's quite quiet today, but when they come on a Friday and stay over the weekend that's what I don't like." Another woman agreed that the council should step in, saying that the council are 'missing a trick'. Amanda Howarth, 56, said: "The council is missing a trick, they should just put a charge in. I don't mind them visiting it's the caravans that stay here I don't agree with. "The caravans, there's some that have been sat there for ages and the council are missing a trick, why don't they just turn that frontier land into a car park for them?" Hannah, in her late twenties, chimed in with her thoughts. "It's not really ideal but I can see why people do it," she said. "My grandad has a house near the promenade and there's absolutely loads parked up sometimes, it's like a wall of caravans. "When he looks out of his window you can't see the view, when you pay to live on the prom you should have a nice view. "I also think they leave a lot of waste, you can see lots of rubbish." Even for visitors to the area, the caravans are a bit of a nuisance. Jennifer Baldwin, a 72-year-old visitor enjoying a day on the prom, said: "I think the caravans should go find somewhere to park that's appropriate, it's not appropriate here. "It's the people who live here who will feel like their town is being taken over in the summer, it's a bit disrespectful." Others highlighted the dangers for those parked up on the busy road overnight. Lancashire Constabulary have said they can use powers to issue fines or remove caravans under section 99 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, which allows the 'removal of vehicles that are illegally, obstructively, or dangerously parked, or abandoned or broken down'. They said that this does not apply to those 'who have just pulled up for 15 minutes to grab a quick bite to eat on their way up to the Lakes', but rather those left unattended for some time, or those which 'pose dangerous risks'.
