Hojlund’s Suii
Roberto Martinez’s side suffered a 1-0 defeat in their Nations League quarterfinal first-leg clash against Denmark, with Hojlund scoring the only goal.
The 22-year-old struck in the 78th minute to break Portuguese hearts and send Danish fans at the Parken Stadium rocking. To celebrate the big goal, his seventh for De Rød-Hvide, Hojlund did the “Suii” celebration, which was originated and popularised by Cristiano.
The Al Nassr star watched the event unfold with solemnity, and with the second-leg approaching, he was asked if he thought the former Atalanta striker was being disrespectful.
What Ronaldo said
The former Sporting CP forward gave a considered response, stating that he did not believe Hojlund intended to be disrespectful and was instead only doing a celebration that has become a vital hit.
Portugal will host the second leg tomorrow and the Jose Alvalade Stadium, and Ronaldo hopes to repay Hojlund in kind to help his country qualify for the semi-final.
“Højlund doing my celebration is not a problem. I know it wasn’t out of disrespect,” Ronaldo told reporters, per Fabrizio Romano.
“I understand that not only him but in all sports, there are people who celebrate like me. I hope that tomorrow he’ll be the one to see me celebrate!"
Meanwhile, Hojlund has now scored in consecutive games. He scored in the 3-0 thumping of Leicester before the international break and against Portugal. He will hope to continue the scoring form after having struggled this season.
