RONAN O'GARA revealed one of Mick O'Dwyer's former players "planted the idea" behind La Rochelle's tribute to the GAA icon. Prior to their defeat to Munster on Saturday, the Top14 club paid tribute to the former Kerry football manager. The Waterville man passed away last Thursday and was laid to rest on Saturday. Before kick-off, an image of O'Dwyer was projected on the big screen while the PA announcer listed out the 88-year-old's career achievements. Speaking after the game, O'Gara said: "I thought it would be good for the Munster people to see that. "He was buried today and I'm sure if I was in Ireland I'd be there or taking a moment out to appreciate everything he's done for Irish sport." The former Ireland and Munster out-half revealed that the idea was inspired by Mick Galway. Galway won an All-Ireland title under O'Dwyer in 1986 before prioritising a rugby career that saw him represent Munster, Ireland, and the Lions. O'Gara added: "A lot of good Munster people are from a GAA background. "I met Gaillimh [Mick Galway] this morning and Gaillimh planted the idea with me so he still works his magic wherever he goes." Fans were blown away by the tribute and praised the French club for the "fantastic gesture". Steve said: "What a fantastic gesture, well done @staderochelais 👏" while Gearoid posted: "Rugby is the best sport in the world ❤️" A third supporter said: "Isn't that just wonderful? Very thoughtful. What a beautiful cross-code, cross-cultural, international gesture." Dave suggested: "Had to be ROG influence" while a fifth fan commented: "Wonderful to see Micko Rest In Peace 🙏 🙏🙏" By the time the game itself was over, Ian Costello's Munster pulled off one of its most iconic wins in recent years. The Reds beat the Top14 side 25-24, with Jack Crowley nailing a sensational late drop goal to give them the edge. Tries from Craig Casey, Gavin Coombes, and Andrew Smith gave them a 22-10 lead in France with 28 minutes left to play. La Rochelle got a lifeline 14 minutes from time when sustained pressure earned them a penalty try and a yellow card for Alex Kendellen, cutting the gap to 22-17. But Crowley struck the decisive blow shortly after, landing a superb 40-metre drop goal to restore a two-score cushion. Tadhg Beirne said: "I watched him hitting a few of them in the warm-up and said it would be nice if we got one of them. “But it’s no surprise to us—he’s doing that in training all the time. What a drop goal that was, but the overall performance from him was incredible. "I thought he managed the game well. Fair play to him.”
