Ilona Maher Reveals the Reason Why 'I Just Do One Shower' a Day During Rugby Season (Exclusive)

Rugby star Ilona Maher is weighing in on a hot topic: How many showers is too many showers in one day?
Maher, 28, fresh off of her first season playing with the Bristol Bears in England, tells PEOPLE she typically just showers once a day — even during the rugby season — as she reacts to the internet's viral debate regarding former NBA star Rajon Rondo's confession that he would shower five times on game days.
"Five showers is cuckoo," laughs Maher, the newest face of Coppertone sunscreen. "Actually, I just do one shower a day, maybe I need to start doing more, but when you're training, you're so busy that you just train."
The Olympian and Dancing with the Stars alum says she doesn't find it efficient to shower so many times in one day. "Because getting sweaty, and then we're going to get more sweaty, and then we're going to get more sweaty after that. At what point is your microbiome going to get f---ed? Is it going to be like, what the hell is happening?"
"So no, I just do one shower," says Maher, "maybe two if it's a real muddy one."
The rugby star also enjoys taking baths, but has had to go without them while playing for Premiership Women’s Rugby in the UK. "I love a bath. There's no baths here, but we recently went to a sauna and an ice bath place and that was really fun," shares Maher.

Taking care of herself is crucial for Maher, on and off the field. Another non-negotiable is working with brands that she believes in, like Coppertone. "It's all about authenticity for me — and brands that I genuinely use, I find easier to promote because it's something I trust."
"You can look in my locker," she continues, "I have Coppertone in there, and it's the brand that I trust to use when I'm about to go out there and sweat and run and be in the sun for hours and hours a day."
Maher uses the 50+ SPF "because I literally want as much protection as possible when I'm out there," she shares. "I can just easily spray it on and be ready to go and feel protected from sun, sweat, heat, water, whatever it is for the whole training session."
