'Important' - Ryan Giggs tells Manchester United how to handle interest in Mainoo and Garnacho

Ryan Giggs believes it is "really important" for Manchester United to keep talented young players like Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo at the club amid growing interest in the pair. Napoli submitted a bid for Garnacho in the January transfer window and Mainoo was linked with a move to Chelsea due to talks over a new contract at United hitting another snag. United no longer deem any player unsellable due to Profit and Sustainability (PSR) constraints and other Premier League clubs have been forced to sell players to avoid sanctions. The sale of the academy graduate represents 'total profit', which helps clubs operate within PSR rules. United haven't been forced to sell a player so far, but it's understood they would consider bids if large sums were put on the negotiating table for Garnacho or Mainoo by suitors. Giggs is one the finest players to emerge from United's academy. He made 963 appearances for the club across a trophy-laden 29 years and played a crucial role in Sir Alex Ferguson's success. He spoke to a handful of reporters at a Foundation 92 gala dinner to raise money on Thursday and said that it is "important" for United to keep their most talented academy graduates. Giggs was specifically asked about interest in Garnacho and Mainoo and said: "It's important. I think it's really important. I think the problem is with the financial constraints that clubs are now under. "I don't get it, it makes it easier to get rid of the younger players. It doesn't seem right because… not only United, but lots of clubs rely on players coming through. Obviously, I've seen first-hand United players coming through and the fans just give them more time. They get behind them. "It's great to see. It's one of your own. Maybe they've followed them through the youth team and the younger teams. They want to see them on the pitch, and not only see them on the pitch but stay on the pitch for a number of years. "Together with that, players who come from other clubs, they sort of always historically showed them what it takes and what it means to be a United player. I think it's really important. The players you mentioned there, they're talented. They've shown what they're capable of doing." Giggs continued: "It's sad to see. You think what would it have been like back in our days if that was the case? How many players wouldn't have played 300, 400, 500 games for Man United? It's sad. I hope it doesn't happen. You can see why clubs are taking advantage of it." Nicky Butt, another co-founder of Foundation 92, said: "I think it's the same for everybody else though, isn't it? It's not just Man United, Man United have a history of bringing young players through and it's what I grew up on, what I did as a job when I went in as a coach and then as an academy manager. "But it's the same for every single club and if you don't get your house in order early doors and you start letting the money just burn away and twist away and don't manage it right, then that's what happens. It's a sad effect, what's happening now is an effect of what's been going on for the last 10-12 years. "It's not nice to hear that Kobbie might be leaving because of financial fair play or whatever they want to call it, but the fact of the matter is, the club has been wrongly run for so many years financially that now the people that are in charge are going to have to deal with that." Mainoo has become a topic of debate among fans and the Manchester Evening News recently launched a survey to gauge opinions on the future of the popular United academy graduate. Those survey results showed 61 per cent of readers want to keep Mainoo this summer regardless of whether an agreement can be struck between his camp and the club. However, 71 per cent of supporters are open to selling him in the summer of 2026 if no new deal is agreed, as Mainoo would be heading into the final year of his contract in that scenario.
