The last time India defeated Australia in an ICC knockout encounter was during the 2011 ODI World Cup
India defeated Australia in the semi-final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai on March 4 (Tuesday), registering their first win over the Men in Yellow in an ICC knockout match since 2011.
Before tonight, India had lost three ICC knockout encounters against Australia since beating them in the quarter-final of the 2011 ODI World Cup.
Batting first, Australia set India a target of 265, and the Men in Blue hunted it down with 11 deliveries to spare - the joint-highest run-chase in the ICC Champions Trophy knockouts.
India lost Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill inside eight overs, but Virat Kohli (84 off 98) and Shreyas Iyer (45 off 62) added 91 runs to bring the chase back on track.
Axar Patel (27 off 30) played an important cameo before getting out, but India still had Kohli in the middle. The star Indian batter, however, threw his wicket away, and India still needed 40 runs.
KL Rahul (34-ball 42*) and Hardik Pandya (24-ball 28) then took the attack to Australia, as India got over the line in 48.1 overs.
As a result, India also became the first team to qualify for three consecutive finals in the Champions Trophy. They won the 2013 edition and then finished as runners-up in 2017, losing to Pakistan.
This is also India’s fourth consecutive final in an ICC event - the 2023 WTC, the 2023 World Cup, the 2024 T20 World Cup, and now the 2025 Champions Trophy.
The final of the 2025 Champions Trophy will happen in Dubai on March 9 (Sunday), with India playing the winner of the second semi-final between New Zealand and South Africa.
