As per BCCI’s statement on Tuesday, this decision comes after bowler faced a lower-back injury during the final test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney. Notably, Bumrah’s recent tests "did not reveal anything severe," but the 31-year-old is still not fully healed to be able to participate in an ICC tournament. He missed the one-day international series against England as well. But why does Bumrah’s presence matter? How Jasprit Bumrah Impacts the Game? The men in blue have heavily relied upon Jasprit Bumrah’s standout bowling in the past few years, and his dismissal from his second ICC event will significantly change India’s bowling strategy for the Champions Trophy. After recovering from back surgery, last year Bumrah made a staunch comeback with 71 wickets in 13 matches. The 31-year-old became the fourth Indian bowler to take 70 or more wickets within a year and was named the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year for his performance. Bumrah, who plays a crucial role for India during dead hours, has excelled on home soil with wins against England and Bangladesh. Furthermore, at away locations, including the 2024 Border-Gavaskar trophy, he maintained his form and claimed the player of the series title with 32 wickets across five tests. His past performance showcases team India’s dependency on the pacer, eventually leaving them with a huge responsibility. Who will replace Jasprit Bumrah? Haji According to India’s team captain Rohit Sharma, following Bumrah’s injury, Mohammed Shami, a “stalwart in white-ball cricket,” will control the front end of the innings. Sharma is also confident in left-arm bowler Arshdeep Singh’s ability to handle the pressure during the death overs despite not playing “a lot of ODIs.” Interestingly, Team India, “looking for something different,” has announced Harshit Rana, Bumrah’s replacement during the ODI series against England, as part of the provisional squad now. This decision left many fans wondering why the 23-year-old was selected for the team instead of Mohammed Siraj, who played a pivotal role for India in the T20 World Cup 2024. However, as per Sharma, Siraj’s “effectiveness comes down a little” when he is not bowling with a new ball. ForbesChampions Trophy 2025: Pat Cummins To Captain For Team Australia Despite InjuryBy Paras J. Haji Interestingly, Rana, who made his white-ball debut against England, had a rocky start with opener Phil Salt, making 26 runs in his third over with three sixes and two fours. But eventually the Delhi-based bowler found his footing, claiming three crucial wickets, including Ben Duckett and Harry Brook, to help India claim victory. Overall, across three matches, he scalped six wickets, helping India complete the 3-0 series sweep against England. Despite Rana’s impressive white-ball debut, Bumrah’s absence will still most likely affect team India during the Champions Trophy. However, Gautam Gambhir, considers Jasprit Bumrah’s absence an opportunity “for some of the young guys, like Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh, to put their hands up and do something for the country.” Follow me on LinkedIn.
